Institute for Christian Studies

St. John’s Cathedral is home to the  “Institute for Christian Studies,” offering workshops for members of all parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. Classes meet fall through spring on designated Saturdays at St. John’s Cathedral. The fee for each class, unless otherwise noted, is $20 and includes lunch. Unless otherwise noted, classes run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral.

Upcoming events include:

A Clergy Morning for Theological Reflection, Saturday, February 11, 2012. Lunch provided for $10.  We will be exploring some insights from Dr. Norman Pittenger of General Theological Seminary.  Our own Dr. Askren will be facilitator for this morning of enrichment as we look at insights from several contemporary theologians. We will have time for group discussion and reflection.  A continuing education certificate will be given for each of our conferences.

The Gospels: Four Stories, One Jesus, Saturday, March 10, 2012.  Dr. N.T. Wright, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey in London has created a class on the four Gospels.  This will be a 25 minute video presentation, followed by a time of group discussion. You will appreciate the unique point of view of each Gospel. Please bring your Bibles for this class.  Cost is $20, which includes lunch. Dr. Askren will be the facilitator.

 The New Monasticism – What it has to offer to Today’s Church, Saturday, April 14, 2012. The Rev. Thomas Beasley will be our presenter. Fr. Tom spent his sabbatical living in a faith community and experiencing this new form of building community for a local church. Cost for the class is $20, which includes lunch. A helpful reading list will be provided.
