“Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back – given back with a bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” (Luke 6:38, The Message).
From Youth Minister Aaron Mayeski:
When I think of radical giving I think of a close friend Katie Meyler. Katie and I first became friends while attending Bible college. She was spontanious and full of life. But what really set Katie apart was her tremendous love for people, the poor, the unwanted, and the overlooked of this world. After college Katie embarked on a journey of missions work and self-exploration that took her from the inner-cities of New York, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis to South America and eventually to post-war Liberia. Katie has since started a non-profit called the the More than Me foundation, with the goal of getting children in wartorn Liberia off the street and into school by providing them with uniforms, school supplies, and scholarships.
I had the pleasure of helping Katie last spring as she was speaking at local high schools in Florida. By making a few phone calls, sending some e-mails, and making some personal donations, I was able to help More than Me gain much needed publicity. Even though what I did was very small, I felt so tremendously blessed and rewarded while doing it. Katie lives a lifestyle of radical generosity that is not easy for must of us to understand. Every time I hear Katie speak about injustice, poverty, or education it inspires me to be less inward focused, and to try make a difference in peoples lives in whatever way I can.
Katie will be coming to visit us here at the cathedral this Sunday, Jan. 23. We will have the great pleasure of hosting her as she shares her vision and experiences with the Youth of St. John’s Cathedral. She will also be setting up a informational table during coffee hour.
