A MESSAGE TO THE CATHEDRAL DISTRICT FROM GINNY MYRICK, PRESIDENT & CEO
JUNE 2020
This past week has been so disturbing, scary and such a long-simmering boil in our community. Some folks are afraid to come downtown, to come back to the Cathedral District churches, just as churches are starting to re-open.
There are a few things I would like to share with you which should give you comfort.
- Statistically speaking crime downtown is almost negligible; we are one of the safest neighborhoods in all of Jacksonville.
- Each church in the District has placed off-duty officers on their property for many months now; it offers a feeling of safety when parishioners come downtown to attend their church.
- All 5-Cathedral District churches are discussing an ecumenical way to pray for God’s direction.
- All 5-Cathedral District churches: First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, Basilica of Immaculate Conception Church, First United Church of Jacksonville, Mount Zion AME Church and St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral recently shared their messages of peace, hope and grace in a full page ad that explains why the Cathedral District is so important to our city and to all people who desire to live in a community of equality, freedom and justice.
Cathedral District Churches in the Resident Community News
In the last 24 months there have been 303 apartments and $42 million in construction announced in the Cathedral District. They are either in the approved, planning or financing stages. This development will be the tipping point for a more robust, healthy neighborhood. Keep praying for God’s direction for our work.
And, keep praying for God’s divine blessing on our neighborhood and downtown and for healing and compassion, not violence to prevail in our city.
