Blessings in a Backpack is Back and at a New School
You can make a big impact by giving just one hour or less of your time each week to Blessings in a Backpack!
Each week during the school year, St. John's is providing nutritional snack food items for children who participate in the free or reduced school lunch program at West Riverside Elementary School (2801 Herschel St. 32205). The children are from families who are frequently unable to provide food for their children over the weekend. Our volunteers pack approved food items that are sent home with the children each Friday. We are addressing not only child hunger but also the learning gap as children are able to return to school on Monday ready to learn.Volunteers will be packing Friday mornings beginning at 9 o’clock.
Volunteers are always welcome. To ensure the safety of the students, volunteers must complete an application and undergo a criminal background screening, free of charge. The volunteer background screening application may be completed online at https://dcps.duvalschools.org/domain/10569 using a laptop or desktop computer (mobile transmissions are not always successful). Click on the “Apply to Volunteer” button and be sure to note our school—West Riverside Elementary.
Once submitted, volunteer applications typically take between 5-10 business days to process. Please note: Clearances are not mailed out. To check the status of your application, you must contact the West Riverside Elementary School (904) 381-3900 or the Department of Family and Community Engagement (904) 390-2960.
You may volunteer once a week, one week a month, or another convenient volunteer schedule for you.For questions or concerns, please call or email, Joan Burchell: 904-619-4229 or [email protected].
