Exciting New Musical Ministry Coming this Fall
I am very excited to announce that this fall we will be kicking off a wonderful new musical ministry here at St. John’s Cathedral. This new program will focus specifically on providing families with children on the autistic spectrum an opportunity for growth, learning, and spiritual development. Marilyn Bosworth, a highly respected music educator and speech pathologist, who specializes in working with autistic children, has offered to launch a Wednesday night musical clinic for these special needs children. This clinic will teach not only music, but will incorporate social and academic skill development as well. Ms. Bosworth has extensive experience working with autistic children in the Duval County school system and beyond. She firmly believes that music can be a unique and powerful conduit for the learning and development of children on the autistic spectrum. We are hopeful that this new program, which will be offered to children in grades 3-7, can serve to help fill a real need in our area, and can help lead these children to reach their full musical, social, and spiritual potential.
Also this fall, Paula Merritt will be launching a new musical workshop open to all children ages third grade and up. This program will provide new and various musical opportunities, including one-on-one coaching, the production of liturgical plays, operettas, and improvisations, as well as opportunities for collaborating with other musical groups within the church.
Pam Searcy will continue to offer Junior Choristers on Wednesday evenings as well. This group, which welcomes all children in Pre-K through second grade, teaches young children the rudiments of singing and musicianship through the use of age-appropriate singing, movement, and games. The group sings twice per month during the program year at the 9 a.m. service.
All musical programs for children will be offered concurrently on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., beginning August 30th. Wednesday evening dinner is served weekly beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Taliaferro Hall.
