Giving Thanks for Malcolm and Marie
Dear Cathedral,
As the summer progresses, more and more of you are appearing in person on Sunday and it is such a joy to see your faces! As you enter these doors, you will be greeted by two very special members of our staff. I want you to know their stories and how God is calling us to care for them even as they are caring for us.
Marie Tarver walked by this Cathedral numerous times before she heard God distinctly tell her to come inside. She was hired as a sexton here 36 years ago. She has become our front door, an angel of love who gives the best hugs. I think one of the hardest parts of the pandemic for me was that I couldn’t hug Marie. Today Marie suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. We are always telling her to take it easy. She has become the heart and soul of this place and although we will no longer let her do the heavy lifting, she remains faithful as the day is long.
Malcolm Williams found Jesus in prison. He realized that Jesus loved him and his life changed. He learned how to paint, do repairs and was released hoping to start a new life. But like many black men with a record, Malcolm found it extremely difficult to find work. Malcolm has worked with us for several years now. I would trust him with my life. He stands outside the church and speaks to the homeless and drug-addicted about God. Many of them have come to church because of him. Malcolm is scheduled to have back surgery this summer. We will support him throughout this ordeal and his recovery. He has become a minister among us.
As the fall approaches, we will be looking to hire one more sexton to help with the moving of furniture and heavy lifting that must be done here at the Cathedral. Because of your generosity, we will be able to do this while still keeping these faithful servants on our staff. God is so good.
Let us give thanks for our community.
In Christ’s love,
Kate+
