Keeping the Connection
Dear Cathedral Family,
Before the quarantine hit, my colleagues and I were planning on studying in London with Rev. Sam Wells, Rector of St. Martin' s-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square in London. He is the author of many books and a brilliant scholar. We were to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury and share a small Eucharist, but all that, of course, got canceled.
Instead, we are Zoom calling with Father Sam. Together we are musing about what is happening to the church and the spiritual lives of millions of people. We all agree that there is some kind of spiritual awakening going on right now. People, when confronted with the reality of death, are turning their attention to God and wondering if there is something more. Virtual attendance has skyrocketed; my colleague Dean Randy Hollerith at the National Cathedral reported having over 25 thousand people watching their services online! Something is happening, and people are tuning in to God.
But there is another thing happening. People realize that they come to church not because they have to or because of some old-fashioned notion of being "damned to hell if they don't," but they coming to church because we love one another. We trust one another. We miss one another. The body of Christ is bonded together in love. It is a real connection, and when we can't be together physically, we miss it.
I want to encourage you to find a small group of parishioners from the Cathedral with whom you can connect via zoom or phone. I want you to talk to one another and share your lives. Connect, reach out. Laura Eldredge can help you find a group, just email her at [email protected] or call the church and talk to Judy who is still answering the phone from home at 83! We are together, just reach out to find out… Don't lose touch with each other in these crucial times. We need one another in the Body of Christ. We are each other's strength.
I am sending you all so much love,
Kate+
