On Juneteenth
People of God,
On this day, in 1865, in Galveston Texas, the last of the enslaved African American people were emancipated when 2,000 Union troops marched into town. On this day, now a federal holiday, let us pray for forgiveness and mercy…
Almighty and Eternal God, it is sometimes only in the light of history that we can begin to see the depths of our sins against one another. Forgive us for the greed and injustice that possessed the hearts of so many of us, that we could enslave other humans beings for profit. Liberate us to see each and every person as a child of God and to recognize the beauty of the many ways humans are fashioned in your image. Forgive us for enslaving one another and for the hundreds of years that it took us to awaken fully to this abomination. Guide us to pursue justice, equality and trust among all peoples and help us to build the kingdom of God here on earth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
