Preparing the Way: Advent
Dear People of God,
This coming Sunday is the last Sunday of the Christian year. And then, we begin anew. In the darkest days of the year, we celebrate the coming of the light in a season called Advent. Advent is a strange and forgotten season. Most all the Christian world and many in the secular world have simply forgotten that this season even exists. They all begin to celebrate Christmas right after Thanksgiving. But we who practice ancient forms of Christianity, we wait for Jesus to come. We practice silence, we light candles, we sing O Come O Come Emmanuel, and we wait for the coming of Christ.
At the core of our faith, we are a people who long to see Jesus again. We expect that he might be just around the next corner, the stranger that we meet on the street. We are always anticipating Christ’s arrival, and in doing so, we are awake and aware of our world, truly living in the present moment. Advent is a practice of awakening, a way of being alert and aware of our surroundings. Try it. Look for Jesus among you this Advent season. See if you can find him.
With love,
Kate+
