When Fr. Thomas Keating died in 2018 at the age of 95, he left behind him a life of remarkable spiritual productivity. He is widely known as the founder of the Centering Prayer movement, which made fully available to Christian practitioners the fruits of a daily meditation practice. Contemplative Outreach, the grassroots network he founded in 1983, continues to provide support and resources to a growing worldwide community of Centering Prayer meditators. Moreover he was also a prolific writer, authoring more than a dozen books on Centering Prayer, the spiritual journey, unitive consciousness, and (his particular love) interspiritual dialogue and practice.
Yet his final gift to the world turned out to be a slender volume of poems, called The Secret Embrace. The poems are important for three reasons: They offer an intimate window into the last stage of Fr. Keating’s own spiritual journey, a glimpse into the costly road that must be traveled in order to see the world as seamlessly interwoven, and relevant comfort and wisdom for our journeys into paradox and unknowing.
Join Cynthia Bourgeault for "Thomas Keating's The Secret Embrace," an e-course that takes a deep dive into these poems and their relevance. Read more and sign up here:
