Who are the Youth of St. John's?
They are the kids who park cars for the Florida/Georgia game. They play Four Square in the courtyard and Minorcan football in the nave. They are acolytes on Sunday morning. They are your Youth Ministry; the present and future of the congregation. In the past two and a half years I have had the privilege to be their Youth Leader alongside some excellent clergy – Father Carl Saxton and Father Allen LaMontagne – and volunteers. Our group averages fourteen attendees on Wednesday nights and as many as eighteen across the two Sunday school classes each week.
We’ve bonded through trips such as Rock the Universe, Spring Retreat, and Corn Maze that have all been made possible with the support from the congregation. But, youth ministry is more than just wacky games and fun trips. The heart of the matter is the spiritual growth of each member of the group. During the past two years, the group has engaged with a curriculum called The Gospel According to Harry Potter that has allowed them to explore a large diversity of faith related topics. On the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, we gather to watch a clip from the current year’s Harry Potter film and then discuss the spiritual and Biblical connections and implications of the topic. As we are in year three of the program, we are viewing and discussing the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). Our topics have been titled Confrontational People, Crossroads, Dementors of Our Lives, and Omens.
By building their faith foundations through the activities, discussions, and events of the youth ministry, the youth of the Cathedral are learning powerful tools and ideas to help them lead strong Christian lives. We hope to continue to learn and grow together, and invite all youth in grades 6-12 to join us on Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings, and at monthly events.
In Christ’s love,
Youth Activities Coordinator
