CERVENY SPEAKERS SERIES: MARCH 17 & 18
Dear Friends,
Bishop Frank Cerveny was the sixth Bishop in the Diocese of Florida and served for 18 years (1974–1992). Before that, he was the fifth Dean of St. John’s Cathedral. His ministry has had a lasting and profound impact on many of us. Last year, some of our parishioners decided that we needed to find a way to honor him. We quietly began a campaign called Preserve and Proclaim: Honoring The Rt. Rev. Frank Cerveny.
We raised pledges for the Preservation Fund to endow our beautiful building, and specifically to endow our pulpit in Frank’s honor. In addition, many donors also contributed to a Proclaim Fund (Cerveny Speakers Series), so that we could create a small endowment to bring great preachers, writers and speakers to the Cathedral each year in perpetuity.
We launched the Cerveny Speakers Series last fall. Our first speaker was Frank’s son, The Rev. Billy Cerveny, who preached a powerful sermon about what it was like to grow up as the son of a Dean and Bishop in this Diocese. Our second speaker, Jan Karon, will be with us March 17th and 18th.Jan is the author of the New York Times bestselling Mitford novels. As famous as she is, Jan is also a good friend of the Cervenys and is coming free of charge as a love-offering to them!
At the Meet & Greet, Saturday, March 17, Jan will converse with me and you will have the opportunity to greet her. Saturday will also feature a Mitford-style tea hosted by the Daughters of the King. Then, Jan will return to preach at the Cathedral on Sunday morning at the 9 and 11 a.m. services. She’ll be sharing the story of her faith—a story she has not shared publicly before.
I invite you to join us in honoring Bishop Frank Cerveny.Join us in hearing Jan Karon, a great speaker and writer. And, join us in supporting Preserve and Proclaim Honoring The Rt. Rev. Frank Cerveny with a donation to the Preserve and Proclaim Fund. Please specify in the memo field whether you want to donate to the Preservation Fund or the Proclaim Fund (Speakers Series).
We give thanks for a great leader in our church and for the opportunity to honor him.
In Christ’s love,
Kate+
