Native Fresh Aquaponics Tour

An initiative of FreshMinistries, Native Fresh is an education-focused commercial aquaponics farm located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Green Spirits took a guided tour of the facility in October of 2020. Director Bobby Lee explained their use of multiple urban farming techniques, which enables Native Fresh to grow produce faster than traditional agriculture year-round while using significantly less water.

“Where most people saw a concrete lot, we saw an opportunity to feed a community. When we started Native Fresh in 2017, we committed ourselves to values that would shape our building process and future operations. From our early beginnings as a parking lot, to a community-based production facility that supplies locally grown produce to area chefs and the Duval County Public School system through our relationship with Chartwells K12, we are very proud of all that we’ve accomplished in these two short years, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

-Bobby Lee, Director of Native Fresh
Native Fresh is located at 616 A Philip Randolph Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida

Green Spirits Walking Tour of the Cathedral District

The Green Spirits kick-off meeting included a walking tour of the Cathedral District. Led by Ginny Myrick, CEO of Cathedral District-Jax., Inc., we toured the old Community Connections building (formerly the YWCA) and heard about plans to remodel it for a multi-income housing unit. Then, JoAnn Tredennick took us to Elena Flats, a historic renovation of a boarding house. When finished, Elena Flats will have four two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom apartments.
