Each year, Christians around the world observe the Season of Creation. It is a time set aside to celebrate God’s gift of creation and to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for the earth. The season begins September 1 and ends October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The Episcopal Church joins this international effort for prayer and action for climate justice and an end to environmental racism and ecological destruction.
At St. John’s Cathedral, we believe the natural world reveals the beauty and creativity of God, and our care for the earth is one way we love our neighbors, both today and for generations to come. This year’s Season of Creation invites us to explore that calling through worship, education, conversation, and community. Throughout the season, you’ll find opportunities to deepen your understanding of the world around us and discover the many ways faith and creation are beautifully intertwined.
Tuesday Film Series
A highlight of the season will be our Season of Creation Film Series, featuring five remarkable documentaries that explore America’s public lands, Florida’s unique ecosystems, and the people working to protect them. Each screening offers an opportunity to engage in a meaningful way, whether it is through Taizé prayer, conversation with a filmmaker, conservation leaders, or local experts.
On September 15, we will host EMMY® award-winning filmmaker and conservationist Tori Linder, producer of Path of the Panther. The evening will begin with a reception for Tori. She will introduce the film and join Dean Kate Moorehead Carroll for a post-screening conversation. We will welcome conservation experts for discussions following Public Trust, and conclude with the acclaimed documentary River of Grass, exploring the beauty and future of Florida’s Everglades.

The Season of Creation also offers opportunities to experience and engage with the natural world firsthand. In partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association, we’ll offer a guided visit to Fort Caroline National Memorial, where participants will explore the rich cultural and natural history of one of Jacksonville’s most significant national park sites. We’ll also host a Civic Voice Workshop, equipping participants with practical tools to advocate for the protection of our public lands and the places.
