Jazz Under the Globe
August 24, 2026Vocal Recital
August 24, 2026Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville
The Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville brings a full orchestral sound to historic St. John’s Cathedral. They will perform beneath the 16-foot Earth globe suspended in the nave, part of our Becoming Whole art exhibition.
The program features Virgil Thomson’s The Plow That Broke the Plains. Thomson wrote the score in 1936 for a government documentary about the Dust Bowl. He composed 25 minutes of music in just two weeks. The result became one of the great American musical portraits of the Great Plains.
Hear this story of land, loss, and resilience played beneath an image of our whole Earth. It’s a moving setting for music about our bond with creation.
Join us for an evening of beautiful music. All are welcome.
