Reader’s Theater: The Christians
Join us for a dramatic reading of The Christians by Lucas Hnath, a thought-provoking play exploring what happens when a church leader shifts his theology and the ripple effects that follow.
Five voices bring to life a powerful dialogue about belief, doubt, heaven, hell, and the bonds of community. Following the reading, the Rev. Canon Mark Anderson will lead a conversation inviting us to reflect:
- How do we make space for others to change?
- How do our beliefs reflect both our past and our future as people of faith?
- What happens when those we thought we knew take a different path?
Come for an evening of listening, reflection, and open-hearted dialogue. The event is free and open to all.
About the play
“The Christians” had its first showing in 2014 at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2015, it premiered Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, and in 2016, it won both an Obie Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. Unsurprisingly, it was written by Lucas Hnath, a former church kid who once aspired to be a minister, like his mother, but is now a playwright and professor at New York University.
