St. John’s Cathedral invites you to experience our newest art exhibition: Wrestle. This powerful and contemplative collection by artist Linda Privitera explores the depth of struggle, reflection, and spiritual insight, offering a unique Lenten journey through art.
To wrestle means to struggle, to engage in deep thought or consideration. Lent offers us 40 days for a deliberate gaze at Jesus and ourselves — a time of sight and insight. Through this exhibition, Privitera invites us into her own spiritual wrestling, expressed through stations, or stopping points, created during the early days of the COVID pandemic. In those uncertain times of quarantine and restriction, she embraced silence and attention, diving deep into her spiritual life and engaging with the Stations of the Cross.
The work reflects her wrestling with the events of Holy Week and their intersection with our
world. As Jacob wrestled with the Holy, Privitera grapples with judgment, violence, guilt,
innocence, falling, rising, mortality, and the promise of resurrection. The result is a collection that is deeply personal, rooted in holy imagination, and both traditional and innovative in its reflection.
Adding an interactive element, two boards in the exhibition remain empty — an open invitation for viewers to contribute their own image of wrestling, a poem, or a written response to the art.
We hope you’ll take time this Lent to walk alongside the artist in a contemplative gaze and reflect on your own journey of faith and insight.
