Artist’s Statement
Like the human body, our planet is a complex web of interdependent, living systems, continuously shaped by a thousand different forces. Each part has purpose in relation to the others. Each part has something to offer or teach us, if only we can take the time to look closely. Painting the landscape is one very specific way of looking closely.
Landscape invites contemplation of both the eternal and the ephemeral. The mountain and the ocean were here long before we stood before them, and they will remain long after we are gone. At the same time, each passing moment is utterly unique and will never return. This wave, this cloud, this shadow, in this season, at this time of day, passes in front of our eyes like a breath.
While landscape art may attempt to represent those moments, it is also inherently editorial. An artist continually chooses what to emphasize and what to suppress, drawing the viewer into a particular experience of time and place.
Lyle Mullican is a landscape artist based in Jacksonville, Florida, since 2022. He has previously exhibited works through the Pastel Society of North Carolina and the Gilded Star Gallery of Rochester, Minnesota. He holds a BFA from Harding University.
