Documentary Screening: Unfiltered
Join St John’s Cathedral’s Green Spirits and St. Johns Riverkeeper for a screening of UNFILTERED: The Truth About Oysters, an Emmy Award–winning documentary that reveals why oysters matter far more than what appears on the plate.
Beneath the surface, oysters are quiet engineers of life itself—filtering and cleaning water, stabilizing shorelines, and creating the foundation for thriving marine ecosystems. They are living water filtration systems, natural storm barriers, and a vital source of protein that has sustained human communities for millennia.
The film centers on Apalachicola Bay, where nearly a century-old oyster economy now faces collapse. With 90% of the world’s ancient oyster reefs lost in the last thirty years, UNFILTERED explores both the urgent threats oysters face and the hopeful restoration efforts—shell recycling, artificial reefs, and freshwater management—that could help reverse the damage.
This powerful documentary invites us to consider how working with nature may be one of our most effective responses to climate change—and why it is not too late to act.

We will also learn about Oyster Gardens—oyster gardens allow you to help create critical habitat for new oysters right from your own shoreline.

As oyster shells cluster and grow, they naturally reduce wave energy, helping to protect shorelines from erosion and the full force of storms. If you care about the health of the river and the long-term resilience of your waterfront property, this is a practical, hands-on way to make a meaningful difference.
