Conclude St. John’s Cathedral’s Season of Creation Film Series with the beautiful and thought-provoking documentary River of Grass, a contemporary reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s groundbreaking 1947 book, The Everglades: River of Grass.

Long before the Everglades was recognized as one of the world’s most important ecosystems, Douglas transformed public understanding of this remarkable landscape—from a place dismissed as worthless swampland to a vital source of freshwater and a treasure worthy of protection.

In the wake of a hurricane, Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream, inspiring a journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Blending Douglas’s writing, personal narration, archival footage, and present-day storytelling, River of Grass explores the history, beauty, and ongoing challenges of this extraordinary ecosystem while asking how we might face future storms together.

Following the screening, Vanessa Trujillo, Ph.D., Senior Conservation Program Manager for the National Parks Conservation Association, returns to share an update on conservation efforts in the Everglades and the work underway to protect this essential landscape.

Copies of Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s classic book, The Everglades: River of Grass, will be available following the film.
