FUNERAL

St. John's Cathedral provides funerals and memorial services that embody our belief in God's promise of renewal and completion. To arrange a service, please contact our clergy at (904) 356-5507. We are here to support you in your grief, offering comfort and guidance as you entrust your loved ones to God's loving care.

Bishop's Garden

The Bishop’s Garden is located in the interior courtyard of the Cathedral campus and provides a beautiful, secluded and quiet place for the interment of ashes and for prayer, reflection and remembrance.

Who may be interred in the Memorial Garden?
It is intended for members of St. John’s Cathedral and their immediate family members. The Dean may make exceptions.

What are the restrictions on the interments?
Only cremated ashes may be buried in the Bishop’s Garden, and the ashes (known as ‘cremains’) will be poured directly into the soil. No urns or containers are permitted. When cremains are buried in the Bishop’s Garden, it is a vivid enactment of “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

Is there a plaque?
Yes, the full name and dates of birth and death are recorded on permanent plaques on the wall of the Cloister located in the courtyard breezeway between Taliaferro Hall and the main sanctuary

What is the cost?
There is a one-time fee of $650 for burial in the Bishop’s Garden. This money is placed in a fund for the maintenance and upkeep of the garden. This fee is payable to St. John’s Cathedral within one month of the burial.

How will the Bishop’s Garden be maintained?
The Sexton staff of the Cathedral, along with lay volunteers, care for and maintain the Bishop’s Garden. All are welcome to sit in the garden and find peace.
