Hello from Deacon Saundra
Hello, I am your new deacon, Saundra Kidd. What a joy it is to be a part of the St. John’s Cathedral community!Despite the challenges brought about by this pandemic, I have been able to meet many of you through various creative means -- Zoom meetings, emails, texts, phone calls, filming virtual services, and in social distancing services. What a happy day it will be when we all can worship together and meet in person!
We deacons have one foot inside the church and one outside. To that end, my focused ministries are Outreach and Pastoral Care. It is an honor to serve on both parish councils. If you are interested in learning about outreach or pastoral care opportunities, please let me know. Even faced with staying at home and limited access, we have opportunities to serve God and share his love.
I will continue to perform “deacon functions” at both virtual and social distancing services -- reading the gospel and sending us forth in the name of Christ. Beginning in September, I will facilitate a weekly Zoom class, Feasting on the Word, a lectionary-based study of scripture.
I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. After attending Huntingdon College in Montgomery, I received my master’s degree in Math from the University of Alabama. Afterwards I taught high school for a time, then worked in the insurance industry for 27 years. After receiving a call to ordained ministry, I prepared for the diaconate through intensive training and education offered through the Diocese of Florida.
I was ordained in May 2016 and served as deacon at St. Mark’s in Jacksonville for the next four years. In June Bishop Howard appointed me to assume deacon responsibilities here at St. John’s.
In October, my husband Bob and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We have two adult children, Tiffany (Shaun) Post, Andy (Katie) Kidd and two grandchildren, Maggie and Emily.
Thank you for welcoming me. Please contact me, [email protected] if you have any questions, concerns, or just to say Hello.
Now “let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord."
